Capturing the Essence
A Color Portrait Workshop with Dominic Avant
Every Monday in July 9:30 am – 4:00 pm
July 5, 12, 19, 26
Price $350. Model fee will be split among the students
This painting workshop will primarily focus on getting the correct proportions of the head with emphasis on building up values, planes, shapes, edges, and color to describe form and likeness in one session. Students will work on translating the values into color. The goal is to capture the subtleties in color temperature changes in the lights, darks, and halftones without creating chalky, sullied, or dirty looking paint colors. Paint application, working thick and thin, making a statement with brushwork, and allowing the surface to become part of the whole visual package will be discussed and demonstrated within this workshop.
The workshop will start in the morning with a demonstration by Dominic Avant, discussing his methodology and then continue with a long pose where he will go around and give students individual instruction while they paint for the rest of the day.
Dominic has won awards through Portrait society of America and OPA. His work is available for viewing at M Gallery of Fine Art.

Each class will begin with an explanation of the days lesson, and a brief demonstration may be given. The object of my classes is to getyou painting... although demonstrations are useful, I believe they should be kept to a minimum allowing students the maximum amount of time spent behind the easel. Individual attention will be given during each session, and group critics will be scheduled throughout the term.
Sessions will cover all aspects of painting with oils en plein air on location. Students will work on composition, planning and editing, design, color harmony, values, and edges. Painting demonstrations, individual attention, group critics, and open question discussions will be given. Subjects will vary from pure landscape, garden, architecture, coastal, and boats.

Morning session: 9:30am-12:30pm and/or Afternoon session: 1- 4pm
8 ticket sessions $300

In this class, I will impart some of the principals that I use and consider most important, whether one is working in oils, or any medium that uses color. The principals of shape, value, edges, and color temperature will be the focus of this ongoing class. The importance of understanding the effect temperature of light has on color will be explained, stressed and demonstrated.
There will be ongoing demonstrations on how to begin a painting in different ways: One must remain open to the possibilities, depending on the situation. This may at times require a different approach.
